Attachment is 152071.pdf I found myself with a 49.4C02 SERVICE ERROR on my LaserJet 5500, and after a search on Google and this forum, I guess I'm not alone. However, while most people were able to solve this one way or another, I am still stuck.
The printer is usually usable, but sometimes I get the 49.4C02 error. It appears to be random, and I can't sense a pattern. This error halts the printer and requires a printer reboot to clear.
Before I list methods I tried to fix the problem, I should say that this problem just started recently. The printer has been in use for many months before then. So I suspect it may not be an external issue, rather, a problem with the printer itself. Someone mentioned replacing the printer's internal hardware, like a "formatter board" or something...
The printer is on a TCP/IP network, connected to a 10Mbit hub, and served from a Windows-based server. The printer and I are located in Japan, therefore this unit's menus are bilingual (English/Japanese). The server runs a Japanese OS and Japanese-version drivers are in use. Here is what I have tried so far to resolve this issue:
- Printer reboots
- Change printer server machine (NT4 to XP)
- Update printer driver to latest (PCL)
- Update firmware to latest (20040609 04.018.3)
- Replace all toner cartridges
I am nearly going out of my mind trying to resolve this issue, so if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
Finally, please find attached scans of the configuration pages for my printer, which I printed via the LCD screen.

Hi Chihiro
I would suggest to do 2 things:
1. upgrade jetdirect firmware - just browse to your printer IP address and go to the jetdirect tab, there you'll see it (sooner or later )
2. turn off the RAM disk: either from the front panel, or from the printer web server, go to menu configure device....
I had seen these errors when there were too many print jobs in the spooler, it would not happen when the printer printed one job and then next one got to the spooler. I have no explanation for it, though
cheers
Petr

Hi Chihiro,
The error message shows that a printer error has occured. Try the following workaround.
Turn the printer off, and then turn it on again.
If the 49 error returns turn the power off, unplug the power cable, disconnect all network cables, and remove the HP Jetdirect card (or any third-party devices), if installed.
Wait at least 30 seconds before plugging the printer back in directly to a wall outlet. Do not plug the printer into a power strip or a surge protector.
Turn the printer on. If the 49 error returns, turn the power off, and then unplug the printer.
Remove the formatter board.
Check that the parallel I/O board is firmly installed on the formatter board.
Check for any non-HP memory DIMMs. If any extra memory is installed, remove it.
Reconnect the power cord, and turn the power on.
If the 49 error returns, perform a cold reset.
Turn the printer on.
Watch the control panel.
When the memory starts counting, press and hold the green (Select) button.
Continue holding the green (Select) button until the Ready, Data, and Attention lights flash once, and then stay on steady.
Release the (Select) button when the Ready, Data, and Attention light are on steady. The control panel will display SELECT LANGUAGE.
Press (Down Arrow) button once. The control panel will display COLD RESET.
Press (Select). The printer will perform a cold reset and then continue its power-on sequence.
If the 49 error returns, contact an HP-authorized service or support provider.
Hope this resolves the issue that you are experiencing.
Regards
Mathew
