I checked the cable prices on PartSurfer, what is interesting is that the longer cable costs less money.
I thought the prices were fairly cheap.
Did you buy the cables direct from HP or from some other source?
C7769-60305 $54.00 Carriage assembly trailing cable kit - Includes installation instructions, trailing cables, two mounting clips, and a ferrite - Cables are 1.4m (4.7ft) long with 30 pin (M) edge connectors - For 24-inch models - From Electronics Module to carriage assembly
C7770-60274 $44.00 Carriage assembly trailing cable kit - Includes installation instructions, trailing cables, mounting clips, and a ferrite - Cables have 30-pin (M) edge connectors - 2.0m (6.5ft) long - For 42-inch models - From Electronics Module to carriage assembly
I checked the trailing cable price on an older model and it was about twice what either of these goes for.
Take a look if you're intetrested:

Make sure the power is off when you try to move the printheads. With the power on they should not be moved.

I am having the same problem. Last time it happened, I was able to move the printheads. This time they are at the far left, but I am not able to move them.

got the same error, and as the other user stated, i pushed the carriage all the way to the right and restarted the printer. That fixed the error.

The cables that shipped in some DesignJet 500's were prone to failure, there was a service note for free replacement, but it has expired.
The cable is relatively cheap, but I advise marking the old cable before you take it out and using it as a pattern when installing a new cable, the new cables are easy to install improperly.

I fixed this error by pushing the carriage all the way to the right and turning the printer off then back on.

The problem you are having is stating the trailing cable is not inserted correctly, at the emod/powersupply there is a j2 on the trailing cable tht should be in the back and the other end should be to the front of the ps..

Remember you have to connect the trailing cable at two ends. One in the back and one to the printhead. Before you reconnect check the ends on the cable as sometimes the connection points get bent or damaged. If that does not solve your issue I would look at replacing the cable. Expensive.
